I do not propose to eliminate any features of the time ruler, but perhaps some key-modified or double clicks can be used there to redesign the scrubbing user interface. My *strong* advice would be to ignore use of the Timeline ruler for scrubbing - leaving the Timeline for QuickPlay and restricting...

Just had a look at your TT on t'interweb and I would suggest detaching the plastic cover while you are recording (keep any cats you may have well away from the deck while you are recording like this).
