You only need LAME if you want to export MP3 audio files.

This is due to licensing restrictions - the patent for LAME was held by Frauenhofer so we couldn't bundle it. The patent expired recently, we are led to believe, so we are considering bundling it with some future Audacity version.

I have a Macbook Pro with a 256 SSD - and using my Edirol UA-1EX to record from HM radio I get no such skips.

My Audacity and MBP settings are all default.

I don't do any editing of defects or re-EQ-ing. So far I've been happy recording straight to 16-bit. There is nothing then needing doing to the file - no process at all which could affect quality. Record by itself or its shortcut R will record on the same track

Shift + Record or shortcut Shift + R will record on a new track

I have done some serious QA speed testing of 2.2.2 a couple of weeks ago versus earlier versions with a one hour project on my W10 laptop - and I found no evidence of 2.2.2 being slower (or faster).
