Really fed up why can't audacity put things in simple language for oldies like me. What you have done is to accidentally press the Multi-Tool button in the Tools toolbar - the asterisk. To revert to default normality, just click on the Selection Tool in that Toolbar. Are you using Audacity 2.2.0 or 2.2.1 - and did you use Save As rather than the simple Save ?
