I never use the gain slider... I just use the Amplify effect. You can enter -1dB if you want 1dB of attenuation. Neither do I - and I got badly burned by it when I once nudged it inadvertently. And low and behold once you expand that you suddenly see (where it exists) a loopback option. I'll have a look to see if ...

There is no default shortcut set for that - but you can add a custom shortcut.
