A common "bear-trap" way of stumbling into this is to accidentally press the F6 shortcut

F1 shortcut will get you quickly back to the selection tool.

OK so you really wanna get rid of the dark gray unused space - just click and drag down on the bottom or the waveform - and for maximum wave height do as I suggested earlier and float the toolbars.

The best tool I used for that came as a steer from Koz for Brian Davies' excellent ClickRepair - it costs a little but is well worth it if you have a lot of vinyl.

That "narrow strip" is the horzontal scroll bar - it is a fundamental part of the Audacity window and cannot be removed, It enable you to horizantally scroll the waveform. It has a close sibling the vericla scroll bar at the right of the waveform display. What you can do if you really want...

But you can record on a new track to record from the position you require:
a) place cursor at required start point
b) Press Shift + Record

You can then mix the two tracks if required.
