Re: High-pitched noise when recording
I can't select a USB device Right-click the Windows speaker/volume icon and select Open Sound Settings. If if shows-up and you can select it from Windows, Audacity should be able to use it. If it does show-up, plug-in the USB deice before starting Audacity. If Windows can't find it, you might have ...

What's the format of the file? (WAV, MP3?, Etc?) Can you play the file in Windows Media Player, or whatever audio player you normally use? but can't find it You don't even see it with File -> Open ? If you don't see it, at the bottom of that File->Open window it says "Files of type". If you select t...

Try this work-around which is generally more tolerant.

Re: Exported Files are Larger than Imported Ones
The size of a compressed file can be determined from the bitrate. kbps is kilobits per second. There are 8 bits in a byte so divide by 8 to get kilobytes per second. Then any embedded artwork will add to the file size.

Re: Splitting up tracks on recorded LP
You can simply select/highlight one song at a time and then use File -> Export -> Export Selected Audio to export the selected song. (Then I sometimes import one song at a time to trim the silence at the beginning & end.)

Re: Truncate Silence with Threshold > -20db
As a work-around you can reduce the volume (apply the Amplify effect with a negative dB value). Then boost it again after removing "silence".
For example, you can adjust the level by -10dB and then then -30dB is the same as the old -20dB.

Re: Checking for "fake" FLAC files
Like I said, it's easy to fake-out a spectrum analyzer like spek if you try. Or there are LAME settings that can give you a better looking spectrum (with the possibility of worse actual sound),

Re: mp3 sounds distorted after imported to audacity
I think I found a fix with MP3Gain ! Make a backup because MP3Gain changes the actual selected file. Under options select Don't Clip . Then select Modify Gain and Apply Track Gain . It looks like the only problem is that it goes over 0dB and most decoders are clipping or distorting when you open or...
