if I'm trying to save them they turn into white noise too. If you WANT a clipped file try the Distortion effect with the Hard Clipping option. 0dB is the "digital maximum" and anything above that can potentially clip. Make sure all Windows "Enhancements" are turned OFF. (#8 Why do my recordings fade out or sound as if they were made in a tunnel?)

No you don't have to uninstall LAME but Audacity isn't using the copy you installed.

Yes, you need FFmpeg to open the M4A.

First, you no longer need to install LAME. It's now built-into Audacity. (Lame is used for exporting to MP3. It's not needed for importing MP3s and it's not used for any other formats.) Turn-OFF Software Playthrough. It creates an internal feedback loop when recording streaming/internal audio.

Right... Audacity's tag support isn't perfect and when you export you are creating a completely new file. Audacity can't directly-edit the original file. It doesn't support embedded artwork at all.
