Re: Noise in exported WAV files

When an analog signal is digitized you get quantization noise (the result of "quantization error".). It's inaudible at 16-bits but at 8-bits you can hear it. It "lives in the background" like regular-old analog noise so it's most noticeable with quiet sounds. However, unlike analog noise it goes-awa...

Re: Audacity and Surface 4 Laptop

You might not see "line-in" but you should see "USB... something", or maybe the name of the device.

Also, plug-in the USB device before you start Audacity.

Re: Audio files very low quality when exporting as m4a

I have no explanation.

There are a few M4A editors that can do simple editing like cutting/fading without decompressing but I don't have one so you'll have to search. MP3directCut (which I do have) is supposed to handle M4A (without decoding) if you add a DLL but I couldn't get it to work.

Re: Audio files very low quality when exporting as m4a

That's odd... M4A/AAC is supposed to be immune to "accumulated compression damage". (MP3 is one of the worst with repeated encoding, but even with MP3 one extra generation of MP3 encoding shouldn't make it "terrible".)

What kind of editing/processing did you do?

Re: silent subliminals

There's more than one way to make a "subliminal" file. The easiest way is to reduce the volume of the subliminal by 20dB or more (you can use the Amplify effect with a negative value) and then mix it with "loud" music or white noise. (If you have two or more tracks open in Audacity they will mix whe...

Re: 3.0.2.. Teacher Needing Help With Installing Scarlett Solo

I assume you've installed the drivers?

Plug-in the interface before starting Audacity.

Then, select the USB interface as your Recording Device (and optionally as your playback device).

Re: Dynamic range expansion, opposite of compression

I don't know but you might want to look for a 3rd-party VST plug-in. The Clip Fix effect can push-up peaks and the Noise Gate will lower quieter parts but they probably won't do what you want. I recorded a piece of audio from a video where the audio is overly compressed. I want to try to undo this. ...

Re: Bass LOW - DJ Recordings

Audacity doesn't apply effects or mess-with the digital stream while recording but Windows sometimes does - Make sure that Windows "enhancements" are turned OFF. When you stream on Twitch are you using the same exact hardware setup? Do you have a link to the specs/information for the iRig you're usi...

Re: YETI USB MIC FLASH YELLOW WHEN RECORD

Have you selected the Yeti as your Playback Device?
and the mic just starts flashing yellow
I didn't see anything about that in the online set-up guide so you might have to ask Blue what it means.

Re: Audacity Newbie -- Recording output to multiple channels?

I can't watch the video right now... Of course you'll need a mixer with USB for recording. ;) And/or you can use a USB interface. Most inexpensive mixers send the stereo mix to the USB port so you can't record more than two tracks at once. However if you record vocals and guitar (or more) separately...
