Fixed it!
Had to switch from MME to Windows DirectSound in Edit->Preferences->Interface, and then select SoundMAX Digital Audio for Playback and Recording.

Options for Interface are MME and Windows Direct Sound. Playback options are Microsoft Sound Mapper, Modem #0 Line Input, and SoundMAX digital audio. I've selected SoundMAX as default. Running through the process again, it looks like I'm having mixer toolbar issues. The tutorial I mentioned above said that since I'm running XP, I should be able to select "line-in" from the mixer toolbar input selector, but it's greyed out. I looked at the "Mixer Toolbar Issues"...
