recording guitar on a laptop

I am about to start working with a laptop using Windows 8.1, that only has a mic input and no line input. What do I have to do (or get) to be able to plug my electric guitar into the system?

Re: mp3s with muted tracks

wc- Thanks for the help. I understand what they are suggesting, but I don't think that's exactly what I have in mind. This seems to be one of the limitations of this program. Although I did discover a complete solution to my problem. What I did was to take the gain completely out of the two vocals p...

mp3s with muted tracks

I have a multi-track recording of a song. What I want to do is to save this as an mp3, but WITHOUT the vocal tracks; in other words, a background track mp3. I tried clicking the "mute" button on the unwanted tracks and saving it, but that didn't work. Is there a way to do that?

Re: punching in

Thanks everyone- So what y'all are sying is that there isn't a way to punch in on the original track. I realize that Audacity is a somewhat limited program (although I am amazed what I AM able to do), and this is apparently beyond the limits. So I'll continue to correct in the manner that I've been ...

punching in

I have not been able to figure out how to "punch in" in the middle of an existing track. IE= to fix up a mistake in the middle of a vocal line. The best I've gotten so far is that Audacity creates another track with the correction, but does not delete the old part. Is there a way to Punch In??? Tom ...

Re: playback/record synch

Hey Measky- I have not had a chance to try the technique that was suggested in your link- I will give it a whirl sometime in the next day or two. However, that is exactly what I was referring to. As I've said, I'm new to the engineering side of the recording process, even though I've been a studio m...

Re: What is an FFT filter?

This is all very helpful. Although I've been involved with recording music since 1980, I have only begun making my own recordings on my computer this year. There are times when I feel that the learning curve is a little overwhelming. So thank you very much for your assistance.

playback/record synch

OK, am I missing something very obvious, or (as suggested by someone) will I need to get an external piece of hardware to synch the playback while recording a new track? I've done enough recording in other studios in my day to make it work, but it's really distracting, and I don't see anything in th...

Re: What is an FFT filter?

Thank you. That was a good explanation, and a good demonstration with the link. So do I assume that this is something I would do individually to selected tracks? Or can this kind of EQ alteration be applied to a final mix?

What is an FFT filter?

I am a guitarist/composer attempting to create my own demo recordings. It's a classic case of old dog/new tricks. I know what most of the features are in the Effects drop list, but I have not been able to find much about FFT filters. First, what does FFT stand for; and second, what does it filter? I...
