forget 8 khz, 16 khz is audio file format for Asterisk's MOH, as verified by me.

Hi,

in Vista works a trick in Realtek to use Mixer stereo as audio input device
(setting Mixer stereo as default signal output device for recording purposes)

Not sure about Vista 7.
XP Windows was coming with audio mixer with all audio inputs + microphone.
