Oops squared: figured out my problem. You have to unlink audio and label tracks first, apparently. I had been warned about this track setting, but hadn't entirely understood. If I'm correct, that means I'll lose my correct label location when I use the time sliding tool?

Oops: but it doesn't seem to work: when I use Ctl "i" I get a split, but when I then shift the right segment to the right with the time shift tool, the left segment moves to the right with it--the space between doesn't enlarge!!??

Deleting a segment
In editing talking, and deleting segments, is the correct approach to select the area one wants deleted, then hit "Z" to find zero crossing, and then delete? Is that what Z is for?

How do I split a track in two, (without making a new track), so that with the time shift tool I can slide the right hand segment to the right, but the left segment stays where it is? On 1.3.9 alpha, I can't type the letter k on the Label Track ("k" has another meaning ). Just reporting--no big problem for me.
