Can I split an aup file while recording a different tape?

I am recording all my old cassettes onto Audacity. While I'm recording, can I open up an aup file from another recording in order to split those tracks? In other words, can I do both functions at the same time? Thank you.

Re: Mono v. Stereo

Thank you for your help! I had tried setting it to stereo before, but got one channel as a flat line. For some reason, it is working now. Transferring all my tapes to computer before an apartment move, this is a great program and I don't have to give up my music. Thanks again.
