OMG. Now I tried updating to Audacity 2.1.0, which should be ok for Yosemite and the problem is back. Any file I open in Audacity plays back with crackling noises. visual studio 2013 is installed

You can look in Add/Remove Programs to check what you have installed.

Isn't this effect meant for noise from recording the internet and for sound card hiss? That is the main problem I test it for. Gale I would hope it is adequate for that task.
