Set it at 0 milliseconds and see if you can record without dropouts. If not, increase it in 10 millisecond increments (10 ms, 20 ms and so on) until you can record without dropouts.

Anyone know if using a different Windows version might work? For some reason either Windows 7 or Audacity is reading the USB input as a Microphone. Audacity just takes the signal it gets, it would be the same if you used Windows Sound Recorder. Did you try adjusting the USB level in Windows Sound? ...

If it was an Audacity project or temp folder you deleted, the data is in small pieces (the AU files).

If you have multiple USB ports, sometimes the ports on one side can be quieter than the other side.

If you've made another recording that should already be in its own track. The two tracks are mixed when you press Play to listen to your crossfade or when you export, but if you prefer you can select both tracks after crossfade then Tracks > Mix and Render to make them into one track. Anyway, why then when selecting 24 bit instead of 16 bit in the FLAC options window, there's no dither at all? What version of Audacity are you using? I would actually expect there would be dither on 24 bit FLAC exported to 24-bit FLAC. There should not be dither added, because if you are not downc...

Now I noticed another issue while recording: the volume level is higher for about the first 15 seconds of the record and then it goes down to what I would consider "normal" level. The difference between that first 15 seconds and the rest are quite noticeable though, as the sound escalates...
