Did you try mp3TrueEdit? The free version is feature-limited and I don't think it has the exact feature you want but I know the person who develops it - he might be prepared to add the feature you want as some kind of commercial arrangement.

Are you sure you were not using File > Import > Audio... ? That shows you the message you quote in 2.0.5 if you try to import a project. No, it started getting reported in Mavericks. Possibly wx3 has somewhat fixed the recording side of that problem, but the more significant problem that the default Audio to buffer can cause (clicky playback) is very much still there.

Thanks for finding this, Cliff. I can make it happen on all platforms, but it seems to depend on having a track in excess of about five minutes long. I logged it here: http://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1197.

The fix won't be mandatory for 2.1.2 release, but it might be done.
