That is not what you said - you said you were recording a flat line.

If you are recording waveforms but cannot hear them, set up audio playback as before in Audio MIDI setup.

You could try stereo.

Note that you may have to choose the MobilePre explicitly as input device in GarageBand. It will record silence if it is set to the wrong input device.
