On El Capitan I have the current iTunes 12.3.2.35. In Audacity 2.1.0 on El Capitan I can still import files from Media > Music, but not in later versions.

I don't know where you are getting Audacity from. Sourceforge has never distributed Linux binaries. If you update to Linux Mint 17 you could uninstall whatever Audacity you are are using and install the "2.1.2-1~14.04" unofficial PPA from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuhandbook1/+archive/ubu...

If you use the current 2.1.2 release this works correctly on Mac. If other than XML extension is supplied, or if no extension is supplied, ".XML" is added to the end of the exported file.

Presumably so that the rule of those first order menu items working on selected tracks is maintained? Taking into account the solo/mute button settings would not break the rule.
