When I hit the back space key the waveform disappeared. I then closed and saved changes to the project. The Audacity version can be found at Help > About Audacity... . It is probably Audacity 2.0.0 if you obtained it from Ubuntu - it is really old now.

There must be a reason it happened. Was the computer shut down before you the project save completed? Was that the first save of the project? If not and you have System Restore enabled on the drive, there might be a "previous version" of the file if you right-click the AUP file, Properties...

I've just tried recording the piano through AUDIO KONTROL using Voice Recorder and sounds ugly as well, that's unfortunate.
