This report is somewhat old now, but definitely suggests that the Audio Units versions of WAVES are/were memory hogs compared to the VST versions.

My understanding is that if you want MBox to work with anything other than the dedicated ProTools software, you must install their drivers for this purpose, in this case the Digidesign CoreAudio Driver.
