I am using WASAPI in exclusive mode. The Roland ADC output level in dBFS and the Audacity data stream input level in dBFS match precisely when the 'volume control' is set at 100%. Why exactly are you not 100% sure? Windows should not be applying explicit sample rate or bit depth conversions.

I agree with the OP. I've experience the same interruption in workflow. I do a lot of heavy editing and it's almost unbearable. Indeed I'd rather have the constant crashing back for the sake of being able to highlight and start/stop. I use Ubuntu and so it's a little tricky finding an older version...

The Audacity volume control has the same effect that the Windows volume slider for the device does.

Some or most USB ports on Windows actually add gain, so the control is potentially needed.

Even with that adaptor, a TRRS input is a mic meant for computer mics (without the adaptor, for headset mics). It is totally unsuitable for stereo recording from a mixer or iPad.
