So I downloaded Audacity 1.3.13 Beta and tried the metadata editor on WAV files. According to the help file and my tests, Audacity does not support Album Title, Trackno and Genre for WAV files. You can try Noise Removal on the hiss. Effect > Compressor might help too.

Well that "suggests" libmad is not to blame. Maybe even that Audacity hangs trying to draw the waveform. How long are these MP3s? Have you ever tried going away after importing the MP3 and coming back later? Do all files even WAVs, OGGs... hang on import? What happens if you click Generate...

Remove those illegal characters in a Hex editor like HxD. I've attached your .aup file with the three characters removed.

I followed your instructions, but unfortunately they didn't bring any usable results, just the regular as it seems If that was 1.3.12 as I assume, it doesn't have file import messages in the log. You would need to try 1.3.13 Beta or 1.3.14 alpha (the Ubuntu PPA you tried before would be fine). Gale

How far are you changing the pitch down? I would suggest you click above the mute/solo buttons to select the track, then File > Export Selection as WAV.
