Either don't select any silence in the region you want to repeat, or don't export as MP3 because it adds silence padding to the start and end of the file. Use WAV instead.

Open the .aup file (it probably has an Audacity icon), not open the _data folder containing the .au files. The easiest way to open the .aup file is File > Recent Files in Audacity itself.
