I cannot reproduce it on Windows 7 either, with EQCurves.xml and EQBackup.xml present in the "RoamingAudacity" directory.

Also I tried modifying a curve I had already exported to and imported back in from the "RoamingAudacity" directory.

You don't say what audio format you are using. If it's MP3, just add it to the Metadata Editor as a freeform field:

Another thing you can do with PowerMenu and Afloat is to set transparency levels of application windows. So you could still see the waveform though the Mixer Board while moving the Mixer Board sliders.

MasSergio's suggestion is another idea, too.

I have now seen several other reports of this so I raised a bug report:

And I assume pressing Stop does not help? Does File > Exit bring up the choice to save the project? If you have never saved this as a project, I would force quit Audacity in Windows Task Manager, don't restart Audacity then follow the procedures in Steve's Crash Recovery link to recover from Audacit...
