If the time recorded is shortened, the music will be slightly higher pitched, and if lengthened, slightly lower pitched. You can only safely amplify to the level Audacity offers when you open Effect > Amplify. Amplifying to the level offered avoids creating distortion. You will still get hiss when amplifying to the level offered if the audio being recorded was hardly any louder than the background noise. Gale

What does the Cakewalk VST message say? If it is a nag to license their product you will have to put up with it if you want to use those VST's in Audacity, because unfortunately Audacity loads VST effect plug-ins on launch, not when or if you use them.
