It isn't frequent that motherboard audio is as bad as you experienced (after disabling sound effects and unwanted audio features).

The fact that HP stumped up the money makes me think that there was a problem with that computer, or they know the motherboard sound on that model has a problem.

How did the computer come to have no motherboard sound? Might that have something to do with it? Just to eliminate possibilities, have you tried removing the USB cassette deck from the computer? That's a great suggestion except that 1. BIAS no longer exists so it is impossible to pay for it and 2. there is no such plug-in in the plug-ins folder. Get rid of (or pay for) the plug-in that is causing it.

If you press "Authorize" in your image you will probably find what plug-in it is.
