If not, did you have Transport > Sound Activated Recording on, which might stop it starting to record?

Actually, I found a simpler solution. I upgraded from Windows 7 32-bit (where Audacity worked fine) to Windows 8 64-bit , where I experienced the gut-wrenching slowness described above. Exactly. That's the problem. The recordings would probably be unusable unless you recorded at the minimum possible input level.
