Make sure you are connecting to an empty USB port on the computer. If you are connecting to a USB hub that has other USB devices connected to it, it may cause the recording to stall.

Make sure Transport > Sound Activated Recording is off (not checked or ticked).

Steve, can you try Leland's patch in http://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=642 ? On Windows that also seems to fix the issues in this topic. Using that patch, I can't reproduce this: Launch Audacity Generate > Pluck Click in "Duration" after the "0" of "1,0"....

If you connected the USB cassette player after starting Audacity, try Transport Menu > Rescan Audio Devices in Audacity.
