Edit > Preferences, then choose "Directories" on the left. Try choosing another temporary directory where the drive is known working and you have permissions to write. Click OK to all prompts and dialogues, then restart Audacity. If the issue persists, please choose Help > Show Log... then...

Try opening the Transport menu at the top of the window. Look for "Sound Activated Recording (on/off)". You may find it is checked (ticked). If so, click on it to uncheck it then try recording again.

Exactly what device are you using for playback? Typically I use an Apogee Ensemble in the studio and a Duet 2 for playing live.
