Re: Recording through usb - only left channel
Lol, you're good. Everything happened exactly as you said, so I suppose everything's alright. Thanks for the help

Recording through usb - only left channel
Hi all, my setup is as follows: Stagg mco-7w condenser mic (specs: http://www.lagom.nl/misc/stagg-mco7.html) goes to the input of an Edirol ua-25ex pre-amp (specs: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=970), which is connected to my laptop (Acer Extensa running Windows Vista)...

Re: Recording maximizes at 0.5, playback works
<<My guess is it's picking up electrical trash from inside the computer.>> Ready to accept that, but why is it only affecting the line-in, not mic-in? The inputs are about half an inch seperate. I think I should be shopping for a sound card (this laptop cost about €300,- when I bought it, about 1 ye...

Re: Recording maximizes at 0.5, playback works
I meant instead of setting the mic-in to 'act' as a line-in (which you said, or at least that's what I understood) I could just plug the jack coming from the pre-amp into the line in of my laptop. Also, I know a bit about the difference between microphone and line signals, but I've been recording on...

Re: Recording maximizes at 0.5, playback works
I'm not sure if I can put the mic-in to line level, but I've got a line-in as well, so I guess it's the same if I just plug it in there? And I see what you mean about the peak not needing to exceed the 0.5... It's just that I'm used to seeing peaks going up to around 0.8 when recording, so I was kin...

Re: Recording maximizes at 0.5, playback works
I can imagine it's got something to do with my setup, but isn't it still weird that the waveform doesn't go past 0.5, whereas it usually goes up to 1.0? I haven't changed anything in my setup; one day it was fine (max-ing at 1.0), the next it was bad (max-ing at 0.5). I'd be happy to describe my set...

Re: Recording maximizes at 0.5, playback works
Hmm, I don't recall setting it to 16-bit, but I believe you if you say the default setting is 32-bit floating. I might've changed it while trying out settings in Audacity and forgot to switch it back or something. But I'll put it to 32-bit from now on, the size of the projects doesn't matter to me a...

Re: Recording maximizes at 0.5, playback works
Ha, 11 kinds of people made me laugh. Also, there are 10 types of people in the word: people who understand trinary, people who mistake it for binary, and people who get laid. I think the default sample format is 16-bit for me. Would it make a lot of difference if I upped it to 32-float? What does ...

Recording maximizes at 0.5, playback works
I'm having a weird problem when recording anything. I'm kinda sure I saw someone ask about this before but I just spent about half an hour trying to find a post about this problem, so I hope people won't mind me asking again. Whenever I record anything, the waveform doesn't go above 0.5 (instead of ...

Re: Background static won't go
my dad used it before me and emphasized the low leven of background noise when he gave it to me, said he had never experienced the amount of noise I'm getting. He also recorded on harddrive, like I do. Still of course, the mic is quite old by now, six years at least. Maybe that's part of the problem...
