Re: What is the point of an interface with a bunch of inputs
You're missing the ability to record 16 (or whatever) separate tracks simultaneously. You may as well ask "why do I need a 16-track tape recorder"? If you take 16 inputs and mix them down into 2 channels that mix is forever fixed. I you take 16 inputs and record each one onto a separate track in Au...

Re: How to record 1 track seperately while listening to anot
I don't see that it's even mentioned. I find the terminology very imprecise, ambiguous, and confusing. In any case, here's how I do it: with a mixer. What about latency? I don't get it, what's the issue? My computer is connected to my stereo receiver as though it were a CD player, i.e. to a set of "...

What is the point of an interface with a bunch of inputs?
If you have an interface that works well and has two inputs, line level, left and right, why do you need more? If using more than one input at a time, how do you adjust their relative levels? Is an interface with many inputs a mixer? If so, where's the knobs and meters? If not, why so many inputs? I...

Re: Crackling Noise Overdubs; Realtek/Windows Twilight Zone

I have the computer connected as "Tape 2", i.e. computer output to amp "Tape 2 Input" and amp "Tape 2 Output" to computer "line in".
Ah, now there is a possible problem/confusion there - it depends on what signal routing goes on in the amplifie...

Re: Crackling Noise Overdubs; Realtek/Windows Twilight Zone
That's normal. You were recording sounds playing on the computer - that is using the "Stereo Mix" input from the sound card. The "Stereo Mix" input is for recording sounds that are playing on your computer. Then you were recording from "Line In" - so you are doing the correct thing in switching to ...

Re: Crackling Noise Overdubs; Realtek/Windows Twilight Zone
are you sure you cant max all the other volumes in all the other control panels then set what you want in audacity okay ? at least that worked for me Oh yeah, that's the very thing I tried first, and the way that absolutely doesn't work -- on my system. On my system, the key is to max out the Audac...

Re: Crackling Noise Overdubs; Realtek/Windows Twilight Zone
In step (3) you don't say exactly what output you are using on the amplifier to plug into the computer "Line In" socket. Is it marked "Line Out", "AUX", "Headphone", "Speakers", or what? I have the computer connected as "Tape 2", i.e. computer output to amp "Tape 2 Input" and amp "Tape 2 Output" to...

Re: Crackling Noise Overdubs; Realtek/Windows Twilight Zone
You understand you made this much worse by wanting to overdub. That involves unnatural crosses between the Windows sound systems. If all you wanted to do was straight recording, it would only be difficult. Ha! It's simple. You have to synch, two ways to do it: read and write simultaneously in real ...

Re: Crackling Noise Overdubs; Realtek/Windows Twilight Zone
I've found at least a partial solution. You have to push the Audacity recording input slider all the way to max, then go into Windows recording devices and set that recording input slider to about 75%, then return to Audacity and set the recording input slider way down low. IOW to set the recording ...
