Re: any plug-in for distortion by too-high gain
always try to record -18 to -24 dB lower than your expected max. The "ideal" amount of headroom depends on several factors. You only ever need >0dB headroom - the important thing is that clipping distortion is avoided. do that and you will clip a lot unless you record a flat line signal h...

Re: input volume with external soundcard
xp and vista seem to work differently for audacity set xp high and lower it, set vista low and then slide it up more is what i infer works easiest. dont touch audacity and it wont change your signal level there is no one setting that works for all cases sometimes you will want to move the sliders to...

Re: power hum when recording from tape reel machine
I'm using dad's good ol' Revox A77 reel tape machine to transfer some old Pete Seeger material, but experience power hum (50 or 100 Hz) when connecting the A77 to the line input of my desktop PC. you have ground loops. if you can feel it then it is bad. i would have an electrician advise you as saf...

FYI, Office Depot has a good sale on a very small HP desktop that's well optioned for my music projects. Dual core processor running at 3GHz, 4 gigs DDR3 RAM, 640 gig hard drive, LightScribe DVD/CD drive - all in a package that's about half the size of a conventional desktop and priced at $440. The...

Re: Determining decibel level of sound clip
?????? if select the whole track and then amplify you get more than one point amplified and it does not stop at a zero crossing. dont knwo about the new version of amplify but the one in 1.3.9 appearently will let you amplify the whole thing into clipping if you want. he strongly implied the externa...

Re: files&folder
good point
i moved all the files once. and got it to work by editing where i found the path in the aup folder (which i suppose was in the aup file )
now i have all the paths set to where i want them so no more monkeying around like this.

Re: Data files switch from *.au to *.auf and go silent
that safe way should be the default IMHOkozikowski wrote:Audacity does not pull sound into itself for editing unless you changed it in Preferences and few people do.
There is an Audacity Preference called "Copy music into Audacity (Safer)" or words to that effect.

Re: Recording Levels Too Low on new Windows 7 Laptop
use db view not linear - easier to tell exactly what you have. you should be recording with most of the signal at -18dB to -24dB to give room for peaks so you dont clip. don't worry about how loud it looks on record. you can amplify later to make it as loud as possible (and compress too to make it *...

Re: Volume mishap
i have no idea what teh default is. i doubt there is any standard. most folks these days seem to make everything as loud as possible. you get to pick how much amplification. you can only go to the max without clipping. you can use less or even lower the level if that is what you need. how you hear f...
