what pc, what opsys, what options set, what version of audacity,
how it is cabled together, what you did, etc yada yada.
and do defrag your disk drive and check the free space too.

i am missing something here -- it seems logical to me that
the timeline should stay where it was
just cause you focus your eyes elsewhere should not move it

you probably loaded it unknowningly with a disk with other software did you just get a usb TT and install their software? did you dl some vsts and install them? get rid of it like any windoze program - track it down in the registry and remove that entry if you are on linux then just delete the folde...
