I kept working at it, now it works. Looks like in rebooting everything I got it to work.
Problem is now I DON'T KNOW WHAT I DID!!

I have a headphone/mic combo with 2 separate leads. It plugs into an adapter that combines into a USB plug. I've plugged it into the port that has the insignia above it that is described in the tutorial. I also have 2 separate round ports where I can plug in the headset also, tried that with the sam...
