There are plenty of media players for linux. I haven't been a windows user for many years, neither I was a WMP user then, so I can't really tell you which linux app would look more similar to WMP. Yes, it is. Do you have any "mix" option on your sound card? If not it's also possible using pulseaudio (default on ubuntu) or jack. For pulseaudio method you need to install pulseaudio volume control. And you need to start recording on audacity (and/or put it in pause mode) for portaudio ...
