Have you selected your USB device as the recording device in audacity's preferences?

Do you get a blue wave after recording? or just a flat blue line?

Go to the mac's system preferences for audio, select the usb device as the input source, put an lp playing, does the sound meter move?

Yes. The trip through analog mixers and ribbon microphones, analog audiotape and multi-channel mixdowns doesn't always produce evil distortion. P.S. - On the downside, all the work I've done so far is now obsolete. And after I've loaded my results into iTunes, I've destroyed my original raw files to save space. Maybe my next investment should be a 2T external HD, dedicated only to saving raw .aup files against the possibility of future gam...

when I try to impo0rt wma files it says that Audacity tried to use FFmpeg to import the file but it didn't find the necesary libraries. I tried to install some libraries but there are so many libraries, codec,etc that I don't know which one I really need. I can import mp3 though. Could someone help...

And upgrade to 1.3.12. It's the recommended version for MacOS-X 10.5 or later.
You can get it from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_mac

Audacity 1.2.6 doesn't play well with Leopard or more recent OS-X versions.

I'm personally a fan of the sandisk sansa clip+ (lets you put a microSD in it for extra storage and plays a lot of formats including FLAC and ogg vorbis, not sure about speex but i can check).
