You don't need to create a new track before recording... When you hit the record button a new track is automatically created.
You also probably need to select the line-in as the recording device in Audacity's Preferences -> Devices.
Read the tutorial on the link waxcylinder posted.

Re: Draft: HOWTO convert audio file formats
Lets say you want to convert a bunch of files in many diferente directories and sub-directories... Here's an example to convert from m4a to wav and place the wav's in the same directories as the m4a's. Lets assume you have all the files in /home/whatever/music/ cd /home/whatever/music/ find . -name ...

Re: Low playback volume
If you're going to record voice only (speaking and not singing), and only need one mic then you can probably do fine with a simple usb mic. Koz has said good things about one Logitech model (I don't remember which model but if you search the forum for "koz logitech" you should get it
).

Re: Draft: HOWTO convert audio file formats
Ok so here it goes... Your files are audio-only files so you don't need those video output options... you can simply use: mplayer "input file.m4a" -ao pcm:file="output file.wav" You can omit the wavheader option since it's on by default. I wrote the input file before '-ao' in my ...

Re: Draft: HOWTO convert audio file formats
I am also keeping all my WAVs against the time when iPod and PC storage becomes really huge (I need about 1 ti 1.5TB for my library at lossless WAV) WC I prefer FLAC to WAV, so I can cut file size in half without any loss in quality! :) giampaolo, I'll post some mplayer examples in a few minutes...

Re: Improving quality audio from a video.
I can only watch/listen to the first 3 seconds of your video, then it goes black and mute. In those first 3 seconds of audio there's a lot of noise, which is louder than your voice. You could try the noise removal effect, but your show seems to be pretty much damaged to make it sound good... Any cha...

Re: Batch process mp3 files
If you have the original files in wav format then you could use sox to batch process the files and add the silence and output to wav too. Then you could use other app to batch convert the wav's to mp3. I'm not a windows user, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't some free graphical wav to mp3 encode...

Audacity 1.2 is old, no longer being developed and has issues with Vista and most modern operating systems.
Audacity 1.3.12 is the recommended version for Vista. You can get it from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows

Re: Stereo Vinyl Recording Problems
You missed a few important pieces of information... What operating system and audacity version? Brand and model of the usb turntable might help too. I'm assuming you're connecting it to the computer using the usb cable. Have you selected the USB device as the recording device? There's also this two ...

Re: Is a faster computer better ?
And you probably won't find parts for upgrading your computer. And if you do find the price will probably be crazy (because old working parts are hard to find sellers usually increase very much the price). So unless you buy a whole new computer, I won't recommend upgrading that one. If you do buy a ...
