Which linux distribution? Were you using the distribution's binary package or did you compile it yourself?

I use audacity on debian without problems, I have not problems editing 1h long projects with more than 10 tracks.

No, it can't.

You could try using sox. I can't help you with batch scripting in DOS, but have a look at this thread:

Re: Lost keyboard focus after import (Ubuntu) [patch]

By gosh I think I've got it! It would seem that on Windows (and I assume Mac since no one is complaining) On Mac, in Audacity 1.3.12, after import, keyboard focus is on audacity as expected and I can start playing by pressing the spacebar. So it looks like this is a linux-only bug. Sorry, I haven't...

Re: Improving quality audio from a video.

I do the 2 stesps but I don't do the 2nd step rightly. I do the 2nd step to all Record. That's how you do it. One thing that sometimes helps getting better results is amplifying the noise sample your going to use for the noise profile, like this: 1) select a few seconds of noise only 2) amplify by ...

Re: Its all Greek to me

From this thread: That was for Audacity 1.3.x and this is the Audacity 1.2.x part of the forum. Assuming that robscott13 has posted on the correct part of the forum... oh, hang on, he hasn't. I'll move this to the Audacity 1.3 part of the forum. I got to it from the unanswered posts and I saw he wr...

From this thread : Looks like you have an incorrect language selection Open Audacity and press Ctrl+P this will open the "Preferences" screen. Click on the 5th item in the menu on the left hand side (interface). On the middle selection box (language) select the language of your choice. Res...

Re: Draft: HOWTO convert audio file formats

You have several graphical frontends for ripping cds on linux, that will convert automatically to mp3 or flac. My favourite is grip, but there are many others, such as sound juicer (for gnome). There should be some for KDE too. Search Fedora's repositories and see what is available. Regarding direct...

Re: Help needed recording Vinyl, results sound harsh

Q, are there better wav to Flac convertors than those in Audacity? I saw Sox mentioned. Better in which way? Faster? Capable of batch processing? You'll probably find plenty of them, some being free software. SoX is a command line tool, if the goal is to simply convert from wav to flac there might ...

Re: Multi-channel Recording in Audacity

Which options do you get on Preferences -> Devices (regarding your external device)? Which ones do you need to select for recording one turntable or the other? Any other option beyond those two?

Re: Lost keyboard focus after import (Ubuntu) [patch]

I haven't tried to compile it yet on Mac, but I'll try to get that working later this week. Regarding notifications I think Edgar and autark are talking about two different things... I think autark was talking about the options on the "post a reply" page, under the text box, while edgar is...
