Paul you didn't provide any info about your system so it's hard to suggest any ideas... What operating system do you have? Which Audacity version? What's your recording source? How do you have it connected to the computer?

PNG is a graphics format, not effects plug-in. So what you probably have is an image file. You can't convert that into an audio effect plug-in...
As far as I know freesound.org is a website for sharing audio samples. I don't know of any plug-in section there...

Do you have Sound Activated Recording on? If so turn it off (Transport menu).
Also make sure you have selected the line input as the recording device in Preferences -> Devices.

That's most likely not an audacity problem... If you google for futex_wait you'll find a lot of threads of people complaing about the same issue on other apps. That seems to be related to some bug on the kernel handling semaphores and linux threads. Here's described a possible workaround for Ubuntu:...
