Even if you put the extension there, I bet some will still delete it :) Another option is not to let change the extension... always adding the extension regardless of having a dot in the file name or not... Use the plot spectrum function from the Analyze menu to see the peak frequencies, if you select just a portion of the noise that will show you the most likely frequencies you need to attenuate.

A notch filter at 389 Hz reduces substancially the amount of feedback. You can apply the notch filter more than one time to achieve an higher attenuation. I use a Q value of 10, but you can play around and see if you get better results with a wider or narrower filter... You can use more notch filter...

Which windows version? If you're on Vista or 7 you should get audacity 1.3.13.
