Most laptops don't have a line-in. I'm not quite I understand how are you connecting it to the usb port... Most laptops don't have a line-in... just a mic-in, which is not suitable for line level signals... Read your laptop's manual see if it has a line-in socket. Check if you haven't accidentally activated Sound Activated Recording in the Transport menu.

You can probably automate the process with a nyquist script, but steve is the nyquist expert here, so lets wait for him to comment on it.

Audacity 1.3.3 is very old... you should upgrade to the latest 1.3.13.

I can't guarantee that upgrading to 1.3.13 will solve this problem, but you should definitely do it... Audacity development branch (1.3.x) has been in freeze mode for a while... that means no new feature are being added... mostly bug correction is being done until the release of the next stable seri...
