Re: budget (usb) mic for classical guitar recording needed
Something I've noticed on several recordings so far is that there's been a bit over-emphasised at about 100Hz, which could be giving the impression that some of the recordings are more bassy than they really are. I can't tell why it's happening - mic position, microphone, the room, or whatever, - b...

Re: budget (usb) mic for classical guitar recording needed
I think I might have found a sweet spot but who knows... maybe tomorrow when I try it again it will probably sound different :P Steve, any tips on the calf reverb parameters? I've tried playing around with it but it always kind of sounds the same to me.... and it always feels like a bit too much rev...

Re: budget (usb) mic for classical guitar recording needed
I've been trying some different configurations, namely putting the mic higher above the guitar but closer to it and facing more down. At first try it sounded better, but after a few tries not sure anymore... Everytime I go through the positions I tried before I have different feelings about it... So...

Re: budget (usb) mic for classical guitar recording needed
Something we have not looked at much, but since we're talking SNR, the volume level rises rapidly as the microphone approaches the sound source (inverse cube law isn't it?). With the microphone position we are looking for the "sweet spot" - the best balance between all relevant factors. Too far awa...

Re: budget (usb) mic for classical guitar recording needed
You did miss one combination. The MacBook Pro has an excellent stereo digitizer. Analog Line-Out from any of the preamplifiers straight to the 1/8" stereo Line-In of the MBP. It can be a mono plug. You'll just get "Left" in the show. Actually I didn't forget about that... I tried it before, but wit...

audacity sometimes won't start when devices change
Problem: sometimes audacity won't start if the devices change since last time I was using it. I'm using audacity 1.3.11-beta on Debian lenny/squeeze/sid (mostly squeeze I think). I have two internal soundcards (motherboard's built-in soundcard and pci-e asus xonar essence stx). Sometimes I have an e...

Re: budget (usb) mic for classical guitar recording needed
Finally I did the test I'd been willing to do for a while... testing the line-in of the xonar essence stx and the line-out of the art usb dual pre. I recorded both samples at the same time, so the captured sound was exactly the same. 40-art-usb.flac : mic -> art -> usb -> macbookpro -> audacity 41-a...

And if I want the opposite I can use Figure of 8 pattern which gives a brighter/drier sound...stevethefiddle wrote:It's interesting just how much difference there is - if ever you want to record a more "background" type sound, you now know exactly how to do it.
