That sounds like a rather complex setup... Not sure if I fully understand the audio path there, but seems like you're using a lot of equipment... that means you have lots of places where to introduce noise and distort the signal... do not install audacity 1.2.x, it doesn't work very well on recent macs. You should stick to the 1.3.x version

When they go too silent usually it means that they got their problem solved or that they gave up and moved in some other direction... hopefully it was the former...
