Re: SVN HEAD and non-English system locales
In ancient times, at least on Debian, does system variables could be set in /etc/environment and it would take effect globally for all users (after login). Nowadays I'm not so sure if that chain is still respected. I think /etc/environment has been deprecated. I'll try to have a look at it later. I ...

Re: Recordings came out too loud
It shouldn't be any difference in view between recording and playback. I'm not very sure if I understand what you mean. To change the volume of the recording you can use the amplify effect (default is to amplify to 0dB, which is max volume before clipping, but you can set it to negative numbers). No...

Re: Sound problems after first experiments with Jack
What a big mess going there... hehe Let me try to get it all clear... 1. If I decide not to use Jack i simply reverse all these steps? Setting up an .asoundrc file won't start jack by itself... You need to run jackd for that. This can be done automatically or manually in several different ways... Th...

You might also want to consider FLAC as an alternative to WAV.
FLAC is a lossless audio codec. Files usually have half the size of a WAV (with no loss in quality).

Re: CONDENSER MICROPHONE PROBLEM
fluorescent lights usually do not go well with dimmers... Trebor, I haven't fall yet but I've learned not to leave objects on floor in the places where I practice the art of "walking in the dark" (I gave up turning the lights on for such brief moments :P). But there are some models that tu...

Re: CONDENSER MICROPHONE PROBLEM
For someone who never used a soldering iron I'd recommend some caution before doing so... You may not only hurt yourself, but also do more damage than fixing on the mic. If you decide to try it yourself practice a bit first with some unconnected wires. If the mic's circuit board still has some of th...

Re: Paste/replace
The straight answer to the initial question is at the end of steve's post: If you need to select an area of a precise length, set the time display in the Selection Toolbar to units that include "samples" (for example hh:mm:ss+samples ) Click on the "Length" button. You can then s...

Re: recording volume slider not sliding!
When the recording level slider is grayed out it means audacity wasn't able to takeover the control of your system's mixer controls. Which is pretty common in most linux systems. In this case you have to use your system's mixer control panel (e.g. alsamixer) to adjust the volume.

Re: no input sound?
i don't get anything on the mixer Control panel. But then it "magically" re-appears an hour or a day later. That just proves that it's not an audacity problem... If the system can't see it, then Audacity can't see it either... Did you do any OS-X upgrade lately? Also check the cables, if ...
