Thanks for the replies - much appreciated. I will try what you suggest and thinking about it, it does make sense to clear temporary files.

I have created a directory called audacity/temp on my MP3 drive. When I exit the program, the .WAV file and the .AUP are both deleted but the data folder remains. I now copy the .WAV file to another folder before exiting Audacity but I shouldn't have to do this!

I have been recording some old records so I can listen to them on my MP3 player. After recording a track I select export as .WAV and save the file to a temporary directory before performing any audio clean-up required. I also save the project .
