Soundcard is Realtek High-Definition Audio with latest driver. Are those drivers from the manufacturer of your computer, or are they the Microsoft Windows version, or are they the generic drivers from Realtek (or some other drivers)? With e.g. Magix Video deLuxe you can record without any problems....

If you have enough of these recordings to justify the effort (or just for fun ), you could make those instructions into a Macro (see: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/macros.html)

Superuser has "root access".
When using an application as "root", you are granting that application unlimited, god-like powers to modify the operating system.
Root access should be used only for making system changes.

Which version of Audacity are you using? Which version of Linux? Did you install Audacity from the main repository of your Linux distro? What exactly were you doing when Audacity froze? Does it try to connect to internet? No. or tries to access microphone in some way Of course it tries to access you...

If you are using Windows 7, you may need to update Windows "Visual C++ redistributable".
