If you plug your headphones into the mic, and select the mic as both the recording and playback device in the "Device Toolbar", then you should be able to hear both your live mic input, and Audacity tracks.

You could use an external microphone and position it far enough away from the computer to not pick up too much fan noise.

You may have the wrong version of "Microsoft Visual C++ Redistibutable" installed. Ensure that you have the correct version for your system.
