You could create a Macro to adjust the amount of time shown to anything you want, and assign a keyboard shortcut to the Macro. Then, when you open Audacity, you would just need to press that shortcut key to get the zoom that you want. The commands that you need in the Macro are: SelectTime:End="...

The number of seconds visible when Audacity is first opened depends on the window size and screen resolution.
The thing that confuses me most, is why does it matter if Audacity shows 18 seconds rather than 12 seconds?

Does your sound card have it's own "control panel"? If it does, there may be some "Enhancements" in there.

Sorry I don't know why the buffer size is so critical. All that I know is that Apple changed something a while back, and for some users, the buffer size became more critical than it used to be.

You need to look in the properties of the recording device that you are using.

This will have nothing to do with Audacity. Files don't have an "auto destruct". Once the file has been exported, that is the end of Audacity's involvement.
