I expect you will find that they are not "32-bit floating".

The recording device may have been temporarily unavailable for some reason - that would cause the error message that you saw.

You need to make a selection of the required duration, then generate the tone. The generated tone will fill the selection.

Are you using a USB recording device?
Does Audacity have permission to use recording devices? (In Windows 10 it is listed as permission to use the "microphone")
