Check the "Effects Preferences" (https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/eff ... ences.html) and ensure that all plug-in types are enabled.

We can't do anything about the noise from the computer fan. If you are using a microphone that plugs into a USB mic pre-amp with a 3-pin "XLR" connector, then you could use a lead that is long enough to move the computer out of your recording room, but of course that would have the problem...

As I suggested previously, try using the computer's built in sound card rather than the monitor display.
